Times of Malta needed a modern, reliable cloud platform to keep delivering fast, trustworthy news to hundreds of thousands of daily readers. Stormit guided their seamless migration to AWS, unlocking higher availability, stronger security, and the agility to innovate faster.

The Times of Malta has a legacy dating back to the 1920s, when it pioneered journalism and the printing industry in Malta. Today, it remains the country’s most trusted and widely read news organization. The website, timesofmalta.com, attracts around 180,000 daily users and generates nearly 700,000 page views per day, surpassing even Facebook and YouTube in local traffic. The key to this success lies in Times of Malta’s commitment to credibility and accuracy. In an era where misinformation floods social media, its fast and reliable breaking news coverage continues to set the standard for trustworthy journalism in Malta.

The existing environment, hosted by a traditional provider, was holding Times of Malta back from developing and adopting the latest technologies. To continue delivering reliable news to its readers, Times of Malta needed a trustworthy IT infrastructure partner that could provide the agility and flexibility to accelerate innovation. In addition, to stay compliant with GDPR requirements after Brexit, Times of Malta aimed to move its systems to EU-based data centers.

To overcome these challenges, Times of Malta decided to migrate its core technology platform to Amazon Web Services (AWS), a global leader in Infrastructure and Platform Services. AWS offers the most secure, extensive, and reliable cloud infrastructure, with over 200 fully featured services available worldwide. Its on-demand capacity, pay-as-you-go pricing, and rapid pace of innovation made it an especially appealing choice. Alex Galea, the company’s COO, and his team carefully evaluated several cloud providers before choosing AWS.

Times of Malta partnered with Stormit, an AWS Partner Network (APN) Select Consulting Partner, to manage the migration to AWS. The move was carefully planned, with Stormit designing the architecture based on AWS best practices. The new AWS environment now enables Times of Malta to deliver rich content to readers faster, scale seamlessly with growing demand, and innovate more rapidly with new technologies.

It is business-critical for Times of Malta that its application and database resources are always available to provide readers with a reliable source of information. To meet this need, the Stormit team designed a Highly Available architecture.

Using Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC), Stormit built a secure and logically isolated section of the AWS Cloud. Elastic Load Balancing automatically routes requests to the most appropriate Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances, with resources distributed across three Availability Zones for maximum reliability.

To align with Times of Malta’s objectives for availability and durability, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is used to store digital assets, offering 99.999999999% (11 nines) durability.

To deliver rich content to readers worldwide, Times of Malta leverages Amazon CloudFront , a massively scaled and globally distributed content delivery network (CDN) with over 400 points of presence (PoPs). This ensures ultra-low latency, high availability, and enhanced security.

Finally, AWS WAF protects Times of Malta’s website and applications from all commonly known application-layer (Layer 7) attacks and exploits, keeping both the content and users safe.
